You've just baked a delicious cake from scratch, and now it's time to bring it to life with a beautiful frosting. But with so many options out there, how do you choose the best frosting for decorating cakes? In this guide, we'll explore some of the most popular frosting options and help you find the perfect one to take your cake decorating skills to the next level. So, let's dive in and discover the sweet possibilities that await!

  1. American Buttercream Frosting: Let's start with a classic favorite—buttercream frosting. Made with butter, powdered sugar, and flavorings like vanilla extract, buttercream frosting is beloved for its creamy texture and versatility. It's perfect for piping intricate designs, creating smooth finishes, and adding vibrant colors to your cakes. Plus, it tastes absolutely delicious and pairs well with a wide range of cake flavors. We cover two different types of buttercream in this list. See our blog post on the different types of buttercream from around the world.

  2. Cream Cheese Frosting: If you're a fan of tangy sweetness, cream cheese frosting is the way to go. Made with cream cheese, butter, powdered sugar, and a hint of vanilla, this frosting is rich, creamy, and slightly tangy. It's a popular choice for decorating carrot cakes, red velvet cakes, and other rich, flavorful cakes. Cream cheese frosting is also great for piping swirls, rosettes, and other decorative accents.

  3. Swiss Meringue Buttercream: For a frosting that's light, airy, and oh-so-delicious, look no further than Swiss meringue buttercream. Made by whipping together egg whites and sugar, then adding butter and flavorings, this frosting has a silky-smooth texture and a luxurious flavor. It's perfect for decorating elegant wedding cakes, birthday cakes, and special occasion cakes. Swiss meringue buttercream can be colored, flavored, and piped into intricate designs with ease. Use this buttercream over American to level up your cakes and add some extra sophistication.

  4. Ganache: One of my personal favorites! If you're a chocolate lover, ganache is the frosting for you. Made with just two ingredients—chocolate and heavy cream—ganache is rich, decadent, and oh-so-indulgent. It's perfect for frosting chocolate cakes, brownies, and other desserts, and it can be poured over cakes for a glossy finish or whipped into a fluffy frosting for decorating. We use a whipped ganache as the foundation for all our fillings. Ganache is also great for creating drip cakes and adding a touch of elegance to any dessert table.

  5. Fondant: This is the method for cakes that are sculpted into almost anything imaginable. Made from sugar, water, and gelatin, fondant can be rolled out into thin sheets and draped over cakes to create a smooth, flawless finish. It's perfect for creating intricate designs, sculpted decorations, and elaborate cake toppers. Fondant can also be colored, flavored, and shaped into just about any shape or design imaginable. Fondant can be challenging to work with but you will improve with practice. Typically, fondant provides a great visual aesthetic, however; most people are not enamored with the favor. For the best tasting cakes, a ganache or buttercream wins hands down!

When it comes to decorating cakes, the frosting you choose can make all the difference. Whether you prefer the creamy richness of buttercream, the tangy sweetness of cream cheese frosting, the lightness of Swiss meringue buttercream, the indulgence of ganache, or the versatility of fondant, there's a frosting out there to suit your taste and style. So, grab your apron, sharpen your piping tips, and let your creativity soar as you explore the wonderful world of cake decorating.
